As GPs and GP registrars, we all want the best for our communities and patients. This is only achievable through a happy, sustainable and appropriately skilled workforce.
From day one of training, registrars are now forced to pick a training pathway, RTO and College. The choice of training has a butterfly effect on future workforce. Registrars are offered membership of multiple organisations which support their interests. Disunity is seeded from an early stage in training.
We need to remember why we all chose this vocation in the beginning. The current interns, residents and registrars are the future voices of the healthcare community. They share the same vocational motivations and ideals; doing what is best for patients and communities.
We need a rethink of the training pipeline. We need to design a training system that encourages collaboration between training providers, yet celebrates differences in skill mix.
Don’t let a form filled in on orientation day be a recruitment sheet for war.
